kashmiri basketry

Kashmiri willow baskets are decorated by mesmerizing sophisticated designs.
It is perhaps one of the oldest crafts in the world, which still holds the imagination
of the primitive as well as the advanced man in Kashmir .this basketry craft is used
for making had-fans, soft prayer-mats for the mosques and mats for doors. But be it
in the West or the East, old or new, there is surprisingly no substantial change in the
techniques of weaving baskets to this day.Surprisingly strong, these baskets are made
by Willow rushes which grow in great abundance in lakes of Kashmir.

For local Kashmiri's use There is a covering case , made for the Kangri - an earthen
pot in which burning coals are kept on a bed of ashes , these baskets are used at homes
or used as picnic hampers, lampshades, glass holders for holding tea, work baskets,
packing cases and large presentation hampers .
