kashmiri pheran

Pheran is a traditional Kashmiri garment worn in winters to get some warmth from
cold weather. Its origin traces back to the Mughal era from where the Royal style of
this long garment was inspired. Historians suggest that the name Pheran was derived
from a Greek word, Apron, while also a belief is followed that it got the name from
 CentralAsia, Tajikistan as Peraband
.It is eminently suited to the Kashmiri way of life, because it provides space for
"Kangri", an earthen lamp carried close to the body for more warmth when
Temperature goes down from zero degree.
Men's Pherans are always made of tweed or coarse wool , while women's pherans,
are more stylized, commonly made of raffel with ari or hook embroidery at the throat,
cuffs and edges. The quality of embroidery and thickness of the raffel determines the
price.
The beautiful traditional Kashmiri dress comprises of two robes placed on top of one
another. The robes are usually embellished with intricate Zari embroidery which
give it a rather majestic look. The pheran  muslim kashmiri women have broad
sleeves and is upto knee length whereas  pheran worn by hindu kashmiri is narrow
sleeved and is upto ankle length.
The neck area of the Pheran is the most elaborate one with fine Zari embroidery or
Brocade work which reflects the artistic needlework practiced by the men and
 women of kashmir
